We are looking at Rudesheim to visit but it appears the hotels and inns are over-priced for November. Is it worth the effort or should we go to Wurzburg? Rick Steves doesn't recommend the visit and we find that he has been right on other locations.
Jim:
My wife, I and 2 teenaged kids went to Wurzburg. It was great! The Residence, the castle on the hilltop, the wine cellar restaurant. I would give it thumbs up.
There are other places than Rüdesheim to stay on the Rhein, if you are comfortable with Rick's recommendations. It seems to me to come down to what you want to see.
Würzburg is my favorite city in Germany for a lot of reasons. However, if you want to take a cruise on the Rhein to see castles, then Bacharach, St. Goar, etc. would do better.
In Würzburg, I like best to cross the river and visit the Mainfrankisches Museum in the castle. I also walk through the vineyards past the 14 Stages of the Cross to see the Käppele. My wife prefers the Arch Bishop's Residence.
Regards, Gary
Wurzburg, definitely! We usually go at least twice a year and never get tired of the place.
We enjoy Rudesheim, but it's a one-trick town, unlike Wurzburg, which has a lot of great sights and is also close to other cities such as Wertheim, Miltenberg, and Rothenburg.
Jim, go to either the Rhine River, or to Wurzburg. You decide. At the Rhine river I recommend sleep at St. Goar (Hotel Hauser is not expensive). A boat ride (large K-D boat) on the Rhine River between Bingen and St. Goar is one of the world's great boat rides. And visit Bacharach. And visit the castle Marksburg at Braubach if you have time for it. But I do not know what the weather will be like there in November.
I am from New Jersey. I found Rudesheim to be the Wildwood of the Rhine. Tourists, Tourists, Tourists.
It was nice - for a day trip - but I would stay somewhere else.
Agree with others... if you need to visit Rudesheim go for a nice day hike - and cruise etc... but stay in St Goar or Bacharach (or evem Cochem on Mosel). A day or two in Wurzburg is great too - residence, castle etc. Its only a couple hours from Frankfurt/Mainz area - so you could do a day trip if you left early and got back to Rhine late. Or stay one nite after your done in the rhine! do both!
