Anyplace but Rudesheim. I cannot confirm this but I think it is the docking site for most of the cruise boats along the Rhine. Every time a ship docks, the town is overwhelmed by passengers. Virtually any town along the middle Rhine or just inland from it would be better. Also look along the Mosel or, if you want more choices, look to Wiesbaden and Mainz.

Anywhere but Ruedesheim. It must be the most touristy place I've ever seen in Germany. Very nice in slower times of the year and I hear the Christmas market there is lovely. But if you are travelling sometime in summer I'd vote for Bacharach. It's very picturesque and a tourist destination as well but doesn't feel quite as overrun.

I see you have already changed your hotel, but I was also going to add my vote to change from Ruedesheim. If you can visit there on a day in the winter when there are no boats or tour buses, then it has its' cute side, and the chairlift is fun. Great views from Germania. The stores offer so much trashy souvenir kitsch though, that it really detracts. I have been there before where you can't even walk down the street there are so many tourists there. The Christmas market is pretty there, but again, way too many stands selling sort of junky stuff. Great for photos though, as they go all out with decorating. There are other small towns along the Rhine, that I would probably recommend for Christmas markets.

I was also going to suggest Bacharach. It's a wonderful smaller town, and a good "home base" for exploring other locations in the area. Depending on how long you'll be there, you might enjoy the trip by boat from Bacharach to St. Goar (Rheinfels Castle), returning by train. If you have a few hours free, you could also hike up the hill to Burg Stahleck Hostel above Bacharach. You could both enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying the magnificent view. Happy travels!

I would rate both as the two most touristy towns on the Rhine. Personally, I would rather stay in Oberwesel or Boppard.
