Route to Lake Konstanz area from ZRH

I am flying into Zurich mid-June 2008. I am planning to go to the Munich area, but I'd like to spend one night near Lake Konstanz on the way. I am not planning to rent a car.

Based on earlier posters' comments, it seems like a night in Friedrichshafen (or Lindau) would be a good place to get over jet lag.

I am trying to determine the best route between Zurich and this area. I am hoping for scenic, but I also know that on Day 1 I won't be able to handle intense sightseeing.

1) Zurich to Konstanz by train; ferry boat to Friedrichshafen
2) Zurich to Romanshorn; ferry boat to Friedrichshafen

Any advice?

Take the train from Zurich to Konstanz and then, depending on the weather, either the regular passenger boat (very scenic ride, takes 2 hours and is most relaxing) if it's bright and sunny or take the high speed boat (45mins only, no outside seating) if it's grey or raining to Friedrichshafen or Lindau. Lindau is the more beautiful of the two but the view of the Swiss alpine panorama is much more stunning if seen from Friedrichshafen. The regular passenger boat from Konstanz also stops at Meersburg which is well worthwhile exploring just to keep you awake. Plenty of steep walks in this oldest walled city/castle of the area...

Thanks Andreas! I admit that you are one of the many travelers whose enthusiasm for this region put it on my itinerary. You've given me the exact information I need to pace the day. Thanks again!
