On Monday, September 23rd, we'll be leaving the Swiss Alps and driving to Blois France for my husband's work meetiing. We need to be in Blois by Tuesday night so we'll only have a brief stop somewhere on Monday night. We'll have already seen the Alsace region prior to heading to Switzerland. Can someone recommend a scenic way to get from Switzerland to Blois France and maybe a good stopover location that isn't more than 25% into our drive. (We'll do most of the driving on Tuesday. Thank you.
I did a similar drive about 7 years ago, from Interlaken to Amboise via Neuchâtel and Besançon with a night's stop in Dijon. Dijon's a very attractive small city, but probably further along your route than your 25% stipulation. I only stopped for lunch in Besançon, but it looked like a very nice town.
Thanks Tom. I'll get out my map and start planning. Is there a stretch that is really scenic during this drive? Is it mostly wine country? Thanks again.
No, it looked mostly like dairy farms, forests and regular agriculture for most of the route (if I remember correctly). You drive through some nice looking towns, but overall the scenery isn't breath-taking. With only two days to make this rather long drive, I don't think you have too many options for world-beating scenery without going really far out of your way.
This is a better (scenery) drive between those places: http://goo.gl/maps/7qVTe
Thanks Andre. Can you tell me if it's the Berne to Geneva portion of the drive that is more scenic or while driving through the middle of France? Also, could you suggest a good town to stop for night on Monday night along this route? Thanks again.
How about Annecy, since you only want to do 25% the first day. It's just a little off Andre's route and easy to get back on track.
Probably the Bern to Geneva portion of the trip is more scenic, particularly the drive around Lac Léman. On the route that Andre provided, I don't know if you can still see the Alps on the A1 (it's possible, but I have not driven it to verify), but I know you can if you take the A12 towards Montreux. Overall, though, the scenery in that region of France is mostly pleasent enough, but nothing breath-taking.
