Route du Vin, where to stay?

I'm planning my next years trip to France and I'm trying to figure out what village to stay in when we do the Route du Vin. Tentatively I've go 3 nights planned for our stay there, that's after 3 nights in the Beaune area (maybe that's too many nights, not sure). I was thinking of staying in either Riquewihr or Equisheim. Thoughts and advice on that?

I think for 3 days both those towns are kinda small. Both make great stops, but I don't think I would want to stay more than a night in each. I would stay in Colmar. I was there in 2010 for 3 nights and loved it.

I enjoyed Eguisheim. You need a car and with a full day you can drive to many of the small towns along the Wine Road. We stayed in Room 12 at Auberge du Rempart, on the top floor. Great place, clean, nearby free parking, huge room and bathroom. http://www.auberge-du-rempart.com/ It would be easy to get to Colmar for another full day. I did not try it but you can ride a bike into the city. Without a car forget Route du Vin. Enjoy the trip!

As long as the area - and not the town - is your destination, I think either of those would work and you would have enough to keep you occupied for 3 days. I've stayed in Riquewihr and the town was much smaller than I had expected. Also completely touristy and didn't even have a bakery that made baguettes. But it had some decent restaurants, the Dopff & Irion winery, and was a good location for exploring the rest of the area.

Thank you for the advice everyone. Riquewihr sounded very quaint, but maybe it's too small to spend 3 nights. Perhaps it would be better to spend 3 nights in Equishem due to it's size and location to Colmar. Yes, we will have a car to explore the area which we'll do to see the little villages along the route. My father served with Patton during WWII so I plan on see the areas where he was in the Alsace area. We will drop our rental car in Colmar and return to Paris by train for our flight home. We will be in the Beaune area prior to making our way up to the Route du Vin, any advice on that area, I have 3 nights and two days planned to explore there. we may rent bikes to do some exploring.
Merci!

Instead of three nights in a small town, how about staying in Colmar? It is a larger town so there is more to do in the evening and you will have more choices for restaurants and shopping. We stayed in a b&b called Chez Leslie. The location is ideal because there is free parking on the street in front of the b&b and it is easy to get in and out of Colmar from that part of town. Plus, it is only about two blocks from the train station, and three blocks from the old section of Colmar. Leslie is an American who has lived in Europe for years and she is a great resource for travel advice. I like to split up our travel time between smaller towns and major cities, but I think 3 nights in either Riquewihr or Equisheim will be too long.

Another town to consider is Kaysersburg. It's a little more centrally located than either Equisheim or Riquewihr.

Three nights in Beaune are not too many. We stayed at Les Jardins de Lois and loved it, and Beaune. Secure parking for your car, easy stroll to centre ville. Would definitely recommend Colmar for your next stop (over the smaller outlying villages). Kaysersburg, Equisheim, Turkheim, and Riquevihr, are worthy of a visit (in that order-IMO). Meursault is a must-see from Beaune. In Colmar, we stayed at Chez Leslie, 20-minute walk from centre ville in quiet residential area near train station. Send pm for more info if you like
