We wanted to go Zermatt to view Matterhorn by way of Rothorn, offers the classic view. Read in R S book you can get to Rothorn only between mid-June and mid-Sept . We will be there on June 12th. The lower segment to Sunnegga is open. Would June 12th be mid-June? Is it a waste of time to only do the lower segment? Thank you for suggestions.
According to the 2012 summer schedule, tthe upper lifts (beyond Sunnegga) do not upen until June 30: http://www.zermatt.ch/en/page.cfm/f_rothorn_paradise However, you could probably walk on the trails from the top of Sunnegga to the Stellisee, which is about as "classic" a view of the Matterhorn as you can get (walk to the far side of the lake to capture the mountain reflection in the lake.) There may still be snow patches around, but th eterrain is not steep there. We did it in late June and encountered no snow at all, just lost of wildflowers.
Thank you for your fast reply. I will look into your suggestion. Will we need to pack jacket for cold or windy weather?
Yes, you'll want a wind/rain jacket, and carry a fleece to put under it. We hiked in falling snow, up to Riffelalp, the day before we went to Stellisee. That was around June 30. Fortunately, the next day was bright and sunny, but still a bit cool. The lunch at Fluhalp restaurant was great if they are open. http://www.fluhalp-zermatt.ch/ There is a picture of the Stellisee view on the website.
