Rothenburg to Munich - cheaper and faster?

Which is time-saver and cheaper?

Going from Rothenburg to Munich and then do a day trip to Dachau (I have to do it on the same day I arrive)? Or Rothenburg to Dachau enroute to Munich.

I will have couple of backpacks and one roll-on. We are two adults and a kid.

Thanks
Sundar

If you come into Munich from Rothenburg via Ingolstadt (not Augsburg) the regional train will stop at Dachau station. There are lockers there. The bus from Dachau station to the memorial is well marked. That will probably be the fastest way, by less than an hour.

If you leave Rothenburg on the 9:07 RB and change in Steinach and Treuchtlingen, you will get to the Dachau station at 12:20. You will have 21 minutes to stash your luggage and get the bus at 12:41 and get to the Memorial at 12:48. The last guided tour of the day is at 1 PM. They also rent audio guides so you can do a tour by yourself.

If you use a Bayern-Ticket (obtainable for €28 from the automat in Rothenburg Bhf) that day, all of your travel (regional trains from Rothenburg and the S-Bahn and buses of the MVV) will be covered for all of you, so it will cost the same whether you stop on the way into Munich or if you go all of the way into the Munich Hbf, stash you bags there, and come out on the S-Bahn to Dachau.

You could answer this question youself using the schedules from German Rail website. Use "Rothenburg ob der Tauber Bahnhof" for start and "KZ-gedenkstaette, Dachau" for destination. To see the route through the Munich Hbf, put "Muenchen Hbf" in the Via field.
