Hi! My mum and I will be in germany for 5 days (including arrival and departure at Frankfurt). We're planning to visit Rothenburg, go to fuessen and maybe if time permits Garmish-P as well. And then back to frankfurt. Is this trip possible by train? I tried using google maps but it seems to show alot of train changes along the way. Any form of help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You can look at the train schedules at www.bahn.de. Change to English by clicking on the flag, and then you can enter Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Fussen to see the train options. It looks like about 5 hours with 3-4 train changes.
This URL will get you directly to the German Rail Query page, in English. Make sure you input "Rothenburg ob der Tauber". If you take the 9:06 connection out of Rothenburg, you will have 4 train changes, but they are all pretty simple. All but Steinach are cross platform or same platform. Any connection you do will have a platform change in Steinach, but it is a small station and everyone will be changing platforms. Just stay with the herd. The conductor is not going to release the train when people are getting on. The incoming and outgoing trains in Augsburg use the very same platform, but you will have a 45 minute wait.
Yes, this is doable by train. I would recommend you go direct from Frankfurt airport to Fussen first, getting the longest journey out of the way. while in Bavaria, you can travel together all day for 26 euro if you travel after 9 am, and all day during the weekends. Going to Garmisch, the rail connection is through Munich, so you could spend an afternoon sight seeing there before moving to Garmisch. From Garmisch you can get to Rothenburg with only 2 connections. At Rothenburg you are only 3 hours from Frankfurt airport, and again 2 connections. The Fussen-Garmisch and Garmisch-Rothenburg legs are all in Bavaria, so you can use the 26 euro Bayern Ticket for both. This will all depend on your flight arrival and departure times at Frankfurt, but with careful planning, it can be done with minimal train changes and cost.
"Going to Garmisch, the rail connection is through Munich" From Füssen, that would be the long way around, taking almost 4 hours. During the day, there are multiple 2 hour connections going by bus to Reutte and by train from there to GaP. There is a 2½ direct bus connection leaving Füssen around noon, as well as some 2 hour bus connections with a change in Steingaden. The all-bus connections can be made using an RVO Tagesticket for 9,50€ pp. The buses from Füssen to Garmisch make a stop at the Hohenschwangau bus stop, so if you are visiting the castles, it is not necessary to go back into Füssen to catch the bus. There are also connections by bus to Pfronten-Ried, then with the train to GaP. These connections take 2½ hours, and you can use a Bayern-Ticket.
Ok thank you guys so much! Do you recommend going to Fussen and GaP or just GaP? I guess for us going to GaP is just for the scenery. Any other places to recommend if im not going to Fussen?
