My husband and I will be driving from Rothenburg to Fussen early September and would like to see the castles and experience the Tegelberg Luge. Assuming we leave Rothenburg by 10:00, should we schedule the castle tours reservations for late in the day and ride the Luge first, or should we go directly to the castles when we arrive in Fussen and ride the Luge later? Based on Google maps and Michelen maps, it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Tegelberg Luge is open until 6pm and last tour at Neuschwanstein is also at 6pm. Any advice on how much time to allow for the drive, the luge, and castle tours is greatly appreciated.
The Tegelberg luge will close down at the slightest indication of rain. For a cheaper price, we purchased several luge runs. After one run, it started to drizzle and the luge closed down until the storm passed over and they physically dried the run with towels. Since the weather is unpredictilble and you would like to do both activities on the same day, I, personally, would not pre-purchase any tickets. I've never had issues getting tickets for the castle and I've been there in the middle of August. Also, since you are coming from Rothenburg, you never know what you may encounter on the way. I would leave this day open.
Karen, I completely agree with Denise. I have been in late April and in late July. No lines for anything in April, some lines in July as it is peak season. I assume your September trip will be more like the April trip, and you have to be more concerned with the operating hours than with crowds or lines. You will love it all! Enjoy,
Beth
Thanks for the advice. We are happier not having a specific schedule, so I think we'll go directly to the castles upon arrival in Fussen, and if if time and weather cooperate, we'll we'll ride the Luge.
I took this picture of the line at the ticket kiosk in Hohenschwangau at noon on Aug 30, 2009. I didn't wait around to see how long it was taking people to get through, but it didn't look very long.
