Rothenburg questions....

Please recommend a hotel or pension outside of Rothenburg odt. We'll be needing to sleep off jet lag and want someplace quiet. Reviews show places inside the walls might be noisy. Prob here for 2 nights. There's 4 of us, we'll have a car, and don't want to spend a fortune on lodging. What else is there to do outside of the walls,we've read about the standard stuff inside the walls. Does the Night Watchman ever have off? I'm worried while we're there that it will be his week off or something!

I stayed here: http://www.kreiselmeier.de/
and liked it a lot. It's in the town itself, BUT it's on a very quiet square (that is just off the main town square;a few min walk at most), so it was very quiet at night. I recall it wasn't a place suggested by Rick in his guidebook, which I found surprising b/c it's EXACTLY the type of place he always suggests!; small, family run, clean and very comfortable (albeit not "luxurious"), and a very good value. My room was cheerful and pleasant, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom (in the room) was large and very clean. Breakfast in the AM was good, too. Enjoy Rothenburg; it's great fun and I loved it! Have a terrific vacation.

I stayed at Hotel Hornburg in 2008. It is just outside the wall and we slept fine. I don't recall much noise at all. However, we did stay in a shoulder month (October) so that may have been why it was quiet. The owners are quite friendly and their dog was adorable. The dog is used to people because he didn't move an inch from his cozy nap spot when we arrived.

Hi Angela, We loved the Gasthof zum Rappen about 10 to 15 minutes from Rothenburg. Very quiet location amidts farm fields as far as you can see. Prices are reasonable, rooms very nice (and big), ask for a balcony room, staff is friendly and the breakfast buffet (incl.) was excellent. www.gasthof-rappen.de The Nightwatchman Tour was great. We simply loved it.
It's everday from mid March to Christmas. www.nightwatchman.de/index.php?cat=182&cl2=182 Paul

have stayed in Rothenberg a number of times (we usually spend three nights). Always within the walls. I have never found it to be close to "noisy". The very central area does get busy when the tour busses are in town, but they leave in mid afternoon.

Although I haven't thoroughly explored outside the walls of Rothenburg, my impression is that it's slightly more attractive than the outskirts of the average similarly sized town, but nothing that the average tourist would find particularly interesting. Unless you have an interest in the mid-sized manufacturing sector that largely powers the German economy...

Rick recommends, in an older version of his GAS book that I own, accommodations in Detwang, just outside R'burg, including Gasthaus zum Schwarzen Lamm and Alte Schreinerei: http://www.alte-schreinerei.de/en/index.html This private B&B in Detwang is listed on the R'burg TI pages: http://www.dorfmuehle-30.de/Warm%20Welcome.htm This Pension is in Rothenburg but just outside the wall: http://www.herrnmuehle-rothenburg.de/ - click through the photos: http://www.herrnmuehle-rothenburg.de/bilder_index.htm

The town website - www.rothenburg.de - has a list of all the accomodations in town and in the outlying towns with links to those that have websites.

Hi Angela, A great place is kreuzerhof pension, www.kreuzerhof-rothenburg.de. They speak english, have parking, it's quiet, nice breakfast, bigger rooms, good value, and more up to date. It's inside the wall, but barely. A REALLY good place to eat is just outside the wall, Bayerischer Hof. Best schnitzel we ever had in 2 trips to DE. It was recommended by the Kreuzerhof owner.
Happy trails!

Was just in Rothenburg. It is almost scary quiet except for groups of school kids this time of year. Town center is a pedestrian zone, so never very noisy. I stay at the Greifen, already mentioned, and it is normally quiet. The Raidel is another quiet, inexpensive hotel where we have stayed. I walked down to Detwang this trip. The church altar there was very impressive. The village is tiny. It might be deathly silent at night. I was only there during the day. It is a good location for walks in the country along the river Tauber. I would prefer to stay in town with greater choices in eateries.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I was finding that May is a pretty busy time, because it seemed everywhere I contacted didn't have room for 2 adults and 2 older kids. BUT, we did manage to get a room at the Hotel Garni Hornburg which looks way too cute! It is inside the city walls, but others on here have said it's not too noisy at night, so we went with what was available. Of course, after I booked it, as I kept looking at the places you all have been recommending, they all look wonderful, in and out of the walls. My brother will be traveling to Europe also after my trip, so will keep all of these for future reference. Thanks!
Angela

We have always stayed inside the walls. Once the day trippers go home the town is spooky quiet, probably quieter than outside the walls. We have stayed at the Altfrankische Wine Stube which is in Rick's book. The rooms are really nice. Since it is in Rick's book make, reservations NOW. We have not stayed at the Hotel Cafe Uhl but a trip to Rothenburg is not official until we have had a slice of raspberry torte at their cafe and based on what we have seen of it, we would not hesitate to stay at their hotel. One thing about the Night Watchman's tour is that you should get there on the early side and stay close to him as he is rather soft spoken. It is a great tour ... never had so much fun learning so much history. Have a good trip.
