Rothenburg - Pension Elke

Anybody else have trouble booking this place in advance? I've been to their website. No English version of the website. It looks like a lovely place and I like the location with regard to walking distance from the train station. I sent email to address published in RS guidebook. No response. I suppose that I will have to book another hotel.

The website has an email address, info(at)pension-elke-rothenburg.de. Did you send an inquiry to that address? In English? Since it's Rothenburg, they probably speak English, even though they don't want to spend the money to have an English translation on their website. If you sent an email to the address on the website, and they didn't answer, they might not know English enough to feel comfortable with a non-German speaker.

Scott, please don't give up on Pension Elke! It's my favorite place to stay in Rothenberg. Send a simple email, e.g., I need 1 room with private bath for 2 persons for 2 nights. Herr Endress will write you back, first apologizing for his lack of English, then telling you what is available and the prices. I don't know where the train station is, but this little pension is perfectly located within the walls of the old city, a very short walk to the main platz. You can copy the German description into babelfish if it's still not clear. It really is a nice, clean, simple, friendly place at a great price.

there are a lot of places in town even without a reservation you may be able to just walk in. most places are right after you enter the main gate or around the square, but if you walk pass the square in the back of the town there are plenty places to stay at. if you drive, suggest you park outside of city and take a small bag with you so you don't drag your bag around.

I agree with the other poster, there are many cute hotels inside the walls. This past May we stayed at Gasthof Zum Brieterle. The owner is Australian and has lived in Germany for 10 years. So no problem with English. They were so helpful giving us directions in the area and the morning breakfast was wonderful. It's just inside the walls on the side closest to the train station. Here is a link to the Tripadvisor page about the hotel. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187319-d1101525-Reviews-Gasthof_Zum_Breiterle-Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber_Romantic_Road_Bavaria.html

Scott, I stayed there in July. It is a clean place to stay. The owners English is not great, but he can understand it. He is a busy guy as he owns a grocery on the ground floor. Breakfast was wonderful and the rooms clean and up to date. My only drawback was the church bells almost next door. The location was good within the city, but there are others. A plus is that you are away by about 2-3 blocks from the main city center and all the Japanese tourists! :) Have fun, I will tell you the city is neat but there are others within Germany neater that have the same charm.
