Rothenburg in March - worth the trip?

We are planning an extended trip through Europe in March with a couple days in Rothenburg, Germany. Would you recommend a stop in Rothenburg in March since according to Rick’s guide book, many attractions are closed? I’m would love to take the Watchman’s tour but it appears it may not be open until mid-March. We are planning our stop around March 15. What has your experience been in Rothenburg during early March?

Also, if not Rothenburg then where would you recommend we spend those days? We will be staying in Munich for a week so any town close by would be an option. I was thinking perhaps Ruette. Thank you!

Hmm, even though it's very touristy, the night watchman tour is one of the highlights of a stay in Rothenburg. See if you can find out exactly when he will be doing the tours in March and make the attempt to be there at that time. It's worth it.

If everything is closed down in March then Rothenburg won't be worth more than one day and one night. The ramparts will be open, I assume, so there is always that to do. Spend more time touring the various towns along the Romantic Road if Rothenburg is dead. Dinkelsbuhl, Creglingen, and Nordlingen are close to Rothenburg and also great little towns on the Romantic Road to visit. You don't NEED a car as there is the Romantic Road bus that goes regularly up and down the route. Check out other areas of this website and Rick Steves' Germany/Austria/Switzerland book for more information about the bus.

For me the main attraction in Rothenburg is walking the city itself. I also enjoyed visiting a couple of the churches and the city museum. Plus I am always up for a cup of tea and a pastry. We had no problem entertaining ourselves there in April; but, I can see how others might have a different opinion.

Regards, Gary

Rothenberg might be better in March. I was there in September 2004. It is beautiful, but very touristy. It will be less touristy when you go. Enjoy!

rothenburg ob der tauber is always worth a visit and i agree that the charm is the town itself. if your starting point is munich i would suggest prien on the herrenchimsee about 1 hr from munich.home to one of the three palaces of "crazy ludwig"
