After arriving from the US in Frankfurt on Sept 4, our plans are to drive to Rothenburg to spend the first night our our trip. Our flight arrives in Frankfurt at 9:30 am, so we'd arrive in Rothenburg early afternoon and have the rest of the day to explore. I just found out that the Imperial Festival is going on that weekend. Has anyone been in Rothenburg during the festival? Will it be too crowded to enjoy the town? Should we rethink and visit and stay elsewhere on the Romantic Road? We are heading to Fussen next, but I think that's a bit far to drive after an 11 hour flight. Any advice is appreciated.
Driving to Fuessen from Frankfurt airport after coming off an international flight is not a good idea. You'll be too tired, especially coming from the west coast. Germany schools and businesses are still on vacation until mid-Sept, so it'll be crowded where ever you go. Stopping in Rothenburg odT is better, but take your time driving. It's worth a stay overnight in the town, since it's cute.
