rothenburg as a base???

is rothenburg easy to get in and out of by train for day trips? We were thinking of spending 2 or 3 nights there as a base and taking side trips to wurzburg a be nurnberg, maybe even dinkelsburhl. Does that sound good? Has anyone tried this ? I'm open to suggestions. Also we will head to Munich after for 4 notes.

"is rothenburg easy to get in and out of by train...".

There is only one train line out of Rothenburg. It goes down to Steinach, which is on the main line between Würzburg and Munich. Using it is not difficult, but it is a little time consuming. Steinach is a small station and easy for making connections.

It's a little over an hour to Würzburg. If you do that, buy a Bayern-Ticket for €28. It's valid for unlimited travel for 2-5 people on regional trains all day on weekends, after 9 AM on workdays, and for the streetcars and buses in Würzburg.

Nürnberg, is about the same distance timewise. Both Rothenburg and Nürnberg are in the Greater Nürnberg transit district, VGN. VGN sells a 2 adult day ticket, the Tagesticket Plus, for €14,20. That is good for unlimit rides on regional trains between Rothenburg and Nürnberg and for U-Bahns and buses in Nürnberg.

For Dinkelsbühl, there are buses (with several transfers) from Rothenburg to Dinkelsbühl, or you could take the train through Steinach and Donauwörth to Nördlingen, and the bus from Nördlingen to Dinkelsbühl. However, don't stop first in Nördlingen, or you will find Dinkelsbühl a big disappointment.

Lily: Just got back. Rothenburg is great, but not as a base for a short trip. One day should be fine for most. Do not miss it, and stay overnight as Rick suggests. It is wierd and wonderful to walk the streets after dark.

Mainly because of train connections, I would use Würzburg or Nürnberg as a center for day trips in the area. Bamberg, another city with its old town intact, is easily reached by both.

This is one of my favorite areas in Germany and Rothenburg is fairly unique with its walls and old buildings largely intact. There are many great choices for day visits or stops.
