Haven't stayed at either place but we did stay at a place just down the road (about 400yards) from Pension Elke called Hotel Gotisches Haus GmbH. It was a charming place and the people running it were very nice. The rooms were interesting. Check out the site below. Have fun.

We stayed in the large family room at Pension Elke three years ago. The family is lovely and the location can't be beat! It's right in the center of things, and quite lovely!
You might have more luck finding places to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber if you spell it the conventional way, R O T H E N B U R G. Note Burg, a fortified town, not Berg, a mountain.
I think there are a lot of places to stay in Rothenburg, and I'm not sure I think those two are the best. There is a list of places in Rothenburg at this webpage.
Pension Elke look pretty good, assuming the room comes with breakfast. That is customary in Germany. I'm a little concerned that they do not say explicitly that it does.
We stayed at Pension Elke for three nights. Room and bath was very clean and breakfast was good. The pension is above a grocery store owned by the same family (Erich and Klaus Endriss) and they are friendly and helpful. Even the grocery store is interesting to look through.
We also really liked Klosterstueble--excellent large room and wonderful breakfast. Parking is available (free at that time -2 yrs ago).
We stayed at Pension Poeschel and were happy with it.
We've stayed at Hotel Hornburg twice, and we loved it both times.
gasthaus spitaltor was very nice. the owner even scored us a parking spot inside the walls.
I was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber a few weeks ago & we loved Burghotel. It's right next to the town wall; excellent breakfast was included. We're females in our 60s so no elevator could have been a problem, but the mgr helped carry our bags up to 3rd floor & some charming American military guys who were there carried them down. We really enjoyed Richard Karpen's night watchman tour too.
Our family stayed at Pensione Elke for 1 night on 6/17/10. It's really close to the gate and short walking distance to everywhere else. Room is simple, comfortable, and clean, breakfast is generous. I would stay there again and would highly recommend it to everyone.
"What happened to Hans Georg Baumgartner? Has he retired and been replaced by Richard Karpen?"
Not according to his web site.
