What is going on in 1st week of October in Rothenburg? I have tried 3 different hotels/pensions and they are all fully booked. Anyone know?

Actually, Germans can use the Internet and most special events and festivals are listed online on many different websites, but often in German. That said, Regiotimer.de didn't pull up anything out of the ordinary going on in Rothenberg at that time, so I'm inclined to agree with Tom - spillover from Oktoberfest.

According to the calendar of events ( Veranstaltung) on the Rothenburg website, www.rothenburg.de, the weekend of October 6 is the festival of "Meistertrunk", which celabrates the saving of Rothenburg in 1631 by Mayor Georg Musch who drank the giant goblet of wine in one chug. The calendar also says that week, Oct 6-14, is the Rothenburger Herbstwanderwoche (Rothenburg Fall hiking week), with free guided walks.
