I am thinking about adding one day in Rothenburg to my trip itinerary. We will be there around May 27th give or take a day or two. I think there is a festival there that week and it may be futile to try to book a room now, but does anyone have any suggestions for a comfortable, affordable hotel or guest house easily accessible once we arrive by train?
We stayed at Pension Poeschel. It was perfectly comfortable and convenient. I think it was one of Rick's recommended places. If it's really busy, you can stay outside the old city walls. If that doesn't work, you can stay in a nearby town nearby and take a local train in to Rothenburg in the morning.
Thanks, Brad. I have read many comments from people saying they loved Rothenburg and I love Medieval history.
You can find a list of accommodations on the Rothenburg website. Change it to English version with the link on the RH side, under "Rothenburg Extra", then select "List of Accommodations" on the LH side. Each name on the list is a link to a page with it's address. You can find it on the map.
The nicest places to stay are in the Fußgangerzone (pedestrian zone, pink cross-hatched streets) because they are close to everything, but it's a walk, albeit not too long, from the Bahnhof. There are some places near the Bahnhof.
I've stayed at a place in Rothenburg, Gästehaus Raidel. Overall it was a positive experience - although I had to walk a few blocks from the station, it was comfortable and very affordable, and I liked the owner - but there were some negatives (traffic noise, bath on the hall). I'm not sure I would strongly recommended it.
Thanks, Lee...your posts are always so helpful. I have to keep reminding myself to pack VERY light since we will be walking from the train stations everywhere!
I stayed at Raidel last May and am hoping to book there again this summer. It's about as close to the train station as any of the Rick recommended accommodations. I had an ensuite room and didn't notice the street noise even thought I was on a street side room.
Hi Jane,
We were in Rothenburg for the Meistertrunk festival last year (so fun! you'll love it!), and we were similarly worried about finding accommodations less than 2 months out. If you can, definitely stay in the old town -- it's more picturesque, and the town gate is only a 10-minute walk from the train station.
BUT: we found that for the festival weekend, many old town hotels require a three-night minimum stay. Since we were only going to be there two nights, we ended up having to stay outside the walls. If that happens to you, we found the Best Western to be a good option. It's super close the train station (I think .3 miles) and only a 10-minute walk into town. It wasn't anything special, but very clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was awesome.
Have fun! The festival is an absolute kick!
Thanks, Emma! That sounds like so much fun! Right now, I am not sure if Rothenburg is going to be on the front end of our trip or towards the end..we are at the mercy of flying space-available on airline passes..needless to say, we will be "winging it". I will keep your suggestions in mind. Thanks again
