Has anyone been to Rosshaupten, Germany or know anything about the area (NW corner of Forgensee)? Our family is considering staying at a farm there. We are also considering one near Wertach (W of Fussen). They both look like rural areas that would be peaceful but within driving distance of activities in the Fussen area. I can't find much info about them online, and the city websites are pretty sparse on information. Any input or impressions would be welcome. Thanks!
We have family that we visit about once a year that is about 5-10 min. from Rosshaupten. You may be staying at a baurenhof, which is a home with a barn attached. Be prepared for the sweet smell of cow. Rosshaupten is a small dairy town where the homes are close together and the pastures surround the town. There is a small town with a church, bakery, and shops. Pretzels are so good if you slice them in half and put unsalted butter on the them for breakfast. Some farms still walk their cows to pasture in the street and others milk thier cows in the barn. Rosshaupten is probably about 15 minutes from Fussen. The entire area is absolutely beautiful. On the main street going through Rosshaupton, there is a Gasthof that overlooks the Neuschweinstein castle. Check out Auerberg, a place nearby to go for a hike and a great restaurant is at Sonne in Stotten. Have fun. We will be there in July.
A place to go for an afternoon in that area is Tegelberg. It is more of a German tourist spot meaning not too many Americans. It is along the main road east of the castle. You can take a gondola ride up there and hike all around. If you look one way you see the jagged mountains of the Austrian Alps and if you look the other way you see the beautiful greenery of Baveria with all of its lakes. It is a popular spot to parasail over Baveria. You can watch them train and take off. There is also a restaurant there to grab a bite to eat or just an ice cream inside and outside. If you go in summer, when you are finished up on top of the mountain there is luge at the place where you would take a lift to go skiing. It is a lot of fun.
