Romantik Road Germany

I need some help on this portion of my trip. We will travelling from Munich towards Salzburg. We have about 4-5 days for the Romantik Road. I would prefer to spend 2 nights in each location but not sure where to stay.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not quite sure I understand what you think you will do. The Romantische Strasse is not between Munich and Salzburg, it's west of Munich and runs north/south. Have you seen the castles. I would spend 2 nights in Füssen or somewhere nearby and see the castle. You might go to Wieskirche, but it's really not worth more than a few minutes and takes too long to get to.

For the other stop, I would suggest Nördlingen. Nördlingen is really worth a day. Walk the Wehrgang, climb the church tower for a view, visit the Ries Museum (closed Mondays). Stay at zum Engel (www.gasthofzumengel.de), right outside one of the city gates, nearest the train station. From there you can tour Dinkelsbühl, which is nearby.

I like Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Füssen along the Romantic Road. As you are going on to Salzburg, I would probably skip Würzburg of those three.

Rothenberg #1; Wurzburg #2; or Dinkelsbuhl is a much smaller version of Rothenberg.

Actually, having seen them all, I would compare Nördlingen more favorable with Rothenburg than I would Dinkelsbühl. Both Rothenburg and Nördlingen have walls with Wehrgänge; Dinkelsbühl doesn't have one. Nördlingen is much less touristy than Rothenburg. I really enjoyed my time in Nördlingen; I couldn't wait to leave Dinkelsbühl.

Do at least 1 full day in Wurzburg. The Residenz and the Marienburg Fortress are up there with just about anything I've seen in Europe. If you like nightlife, it's a university town and there's a ton of great bars and clubs downtown as well and if you like German wine (which I don't), Wurzburg is one of the best wine towns in Germany.

Here's my take on the Romantic Road... drive it if there's specific towns along the route you want to visit. But with the exception of the southern terminus (great view of Neuschwanstein and the Alps), the scenery along the Romantic Road is no better than about a dozen other secondary routes in Bavaria. You'll see vistas as good or better between Munich and Salzburg.

I remember how let down I was when we drove the Romantic Road several years ago. We went back to the Autobahn because we found the actual drive pretty boring.

Got a big kick out of counting tourists carrying RS book as we walked around the walls of RodT back when there was still only one Kathe Wolfhardt shoppe in the town.

Had a really good time in Fuessen and Wuertzburg. Did think RodT before the great onslaught was pretty good.

I like Wuerzburg better than the others. It has a lot to see and do. Plan at least one overnight there and at least one full day. See the Castle and the Prince Bishop's palace.

Rothenburg o.d.t. is another favorite. Again plan one overnight and one full day. Wander the area, walk the wall, climb a tower and take the Nightwatchman's tour.

Neuschwanstein is an icon but not my favorite. See it once along with Hohenschwangau. If you like steep hikes and ruins, Ehrenburg is worth seeing also. I'm not a fan of either Reutte or Fuesson. The best photo op is from Marienbrueke, a bridge up the hiking trail from the bus stop.

Salzburg is wonderful. See the castle, churches, gardens, cemetery and brewery - all within easy walking distance. In the evening, walk toward the brewery from town. Cross one of the walking bridges, stop in the middle and look back at the lighted old city. This is one of the greatest single views I've seen anywhere in Europe.

Stay in Rothenburg ob der tauber. It is a great little German town. Follow RS recommendations on where to eat and stay. Great place don't miss it!

if you can't decide which town to stay at, why not just 1 night at each place? i think Rothenburg ODT is no.1 priority but still you can see everything with just 1 overnight, Dinkelsbühl is even smaller; you can day trip to fusen or stay for 1 night (2 if you visit Newschwanstein), and wuzburg 1 night. i think Wuzburg is probably the biggest town among these, but you can finish the palace in a couple of hours. also i found the romantic road is not very clearly marked so there will be times when you venture on the freeway. this would save you some time, so don't get stressed out if you wondered off the romantic road.

We drove some of the Romantic Road. It didn't take long before my family voted to use the Autobahn, spend less time in the car and visit only our top sites.
