I am trying to plan my trip to Germany. I have 2 or 3 nights to spend along the Romantic Road. Of all the cities along the way, which ones would be the best to overnight at?
Currently I am thinking that I would do Fussen, Rothenburg, and Wurzburg. I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. It will be me and my 13 year old daughter. So I am looking for places that have shops and not so expensive places to eat.
Of the towns on the RR, Würzburg and Rothenburg are on the northern end. If you want to split your travel, at least pick a midway point like Nördlingen or Donauwörth. Of course, Rothenburg is the penultimate walled city on the RR. If you see it, you can skip the others.
Places that "have shops and not so expensive places to eat" is what is called "conflicting objectives". Places that have shops are going to have expensive place to eat. They go together.
Pick a small town, forget the shops, and spend less money.
I've traveled the RR several times & have stayed in Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Nordlingen, and Schwangau. Have also stayed in Oberammergau, about 30 minutes from the RR. With just 2 or 3 nights, skip Wurzburg and begin in Rothenburg (spend the night; it's more enjoyable after the tour buses have gone). At the southern end you really need to spend 2 nights to have time to see everything. I'd suggest Schwangau or Oberammergau. I like Oberammergau because there are quite a few good stores there (especially for woodcarvings and Christmas items), it's not overcrowded with tourists, and there are several good places to eat with reasonable prices. Linderhof Palace is just outside of Oberammergau, and you'll also pass the Wies Kirche located just east of Steingaden (the village where you turn to go to Oberammergau). Recommend stops at Dinklesbuhl & Nordlingen. 2nd day see Neuschwanstein in the am, Weis Kirche & Linderhof in the pm. Try Hotel Markusturn 1st night, Hotel Turmwirt nights 2 & 3.
Rothenburg would be fun for your daughter because you could take her to the Night Watchman's Tour which has always been a big hit.
Are you traveling by car or train? That makes a big difference. We drove to Rothenburg which helped a lot because we could load up on cheap groceries outside of town.
Jamie, my vote would also be Rothenburg. I started there on my trip last year, and would like to return. As someone else pointed out, the town becomes much nicer at night when the "day trippers" have left, and of course the Night Watchman's tour is very entertaining.
I stayed at the Hotel Goldene Rose, which was basic but very comfortable. The service was great and I would definitely stay there again.
Happy travels!!!
