Romantic Road help with plans

We will be taking the train from Mainz into Wurzburg. Not sure of the timing of this. I'm hoping mid day. Getting a rental car and then we want to explore:The Residenz, the Marienberg Fortress, check out the Old Main bridge. So, I'm not sure if we should stay in Wurzburg or head on. We have the next two full days to travel down the Romantic Road. so far on the list of towns to visit are Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl. someone had mentioned that Nördlingen is interesting.
We will be there in early Oct. with Oktoberfest still on in the area others might be traveling in the area as well & I'm not thinking that I should leave a reservation to chance but I'm not sure how long to plan along the way and not make the 8th a race day to Dachau. We have a reservation on Oct. 8 in Dachau. Oct. 6th arrive in Wurzburg Any ideas.

Also, Are there any Moated Castles along the Romantic Road. Might be neat to see at least one. ;)

I can't say with 100% certainty that there are no moated castles in that region, but in general, that feature is very uncommon in southern Germany. You tend to find moats in the flatter landscape of the north, where the terrain doesn't offer many easily defendable hilltops and mountains. I haven't driven the entirety of the Romantic Road (not necessary, because the scenery isn't any better than what you would see from the Autobahn), but I don't think it's a partciularly castle-rich area of Germany.

I guess, the main thing is knowing how much time to plan along the Romantic Road.

If your trip includes stops along the Romantic Road, with the exception of Würzburg, which has more to offer, I've found most of the towns are worth maybe 1-3 hours. I'm probably going to sound like a broken record to people who post frequently, but here goes again... if there's towns along the Romantic Road that interest you, by all means, visit them, but don't drive it just for the road itself. It's nothing more than a typical rural secondary route for most of it's length. Scenery is about average to below average for Bavaria. Use the A7 Autobahn, and don't waste time driving the entire length of the Romantic Road.

Last year we drove from Wurzburg to Donauworth in a day, with stops at Rot, Dink, and Nord. Oh, and a drive-by Tilman Riemenschneider altarpiece in Creglingen. We spent a couple of hours wandering each town and felt content. Actually, in Nordlingen we sorta crashed with coffee and cakes and just stared as far as we could from our cafe table. The drive is not special in itself as noted. But it is something to see if you have the time and inclination. Were I arriving in Wurzburg midday, I'd stay overnight and start my drive the next morning. Have a great time and safe travels.

I realize its not the road itself that is of interest. I guess I will research the towns & then decide where we should stop for our second night. We will stay in Wurzburg the first night.

Wurzburg is one of my favorites in Germany but of course I lived there for two years so I'm a bit biased. Sounds like you've done your reasearch and know the main things to see (Residenz, Marienburg, old bridge) but if you're staying overnight and enjoy nightlife, there's plenty of it there as it's a big college town that features plenty of interesting bars, clubs and pubs.

Some of the towns are interesting, including Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl. However the road itself was nothing amazing, and I'd add that it is not that well marked. Sometimes you'll be driving along and it is clear that you're on the road because you see the signs, then you come to an intersection and its not clear which is supposed to be the right way. If you are intent on driving the road, even in stretches, get something better than the high-level map that showd the towns but not enough detail of what roads are part of the Romantic Road. If I was doing it again, I'd do what Tom said. Pick some towns in the area you want to visit. Go see them, and if part of the route was on the Romantic Road, great, but I wouldn't sweat it.
