Romantic places in Munich

Hi everyone,

I have posted a few questions here and have had great responses so I thought I would ask another one. I am travelling to Munich on August 25th for 8 nights with my partner and parents. I am going to propose to my partner so I just want to know if anyone can suggest a particularly romantic spot to do this.

Thanks again!!

No, not the Hofbräuhaus, not at Dachau.

Maybe by one of the swan ponds in the park at Schloss Nymphenburg.

You could go down to Berchtesgaden. If the weather is good, the view from Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles' Nest) is spectacular. The view of Obersee, at the far end of Königssee, is also very pretty.

Thanks for everyones' suggestions so far. We are staying in Hohenschwangau for 3 nights after Munich, which would be the perfect place, but I have already had the ring for 3 months and I don't think I could hold onto it any longer.

Anyway, thanks everyone!

One place within Munich might be the small Greek pavilion in the Englischer Garten. You have a great view of both the city and the park. This picture on Wikipedia was probably taken from there:

The Hofgarten by the Residenz offers another serene vista you can consider. Some guy with a cello or violin frequently plays by the fountain or in the pavilion.

Hi Brett,

I've never been to the area and therefore have absolutely nothing useful to add. But, I was wondering if you could come back after The Deed was done to update us. Pretty please? I just love posts like this.

PS Are there any women out there that could weigh in? Not that the boys aren't doing a fine job, just wondering what a woman's perspective would be.

PPS Brett, my (now) husband, unbeknownst to me, schlepped my engagement ring to Europe to propose. We started that trip in Dubrovnik but he waited 5 days until we got to Mostar in Bosnia to do it, as he really wanted to do it on the Old Bridge. While I would have still said yes had he asked me in Dubrovnik, looking back I am sooo glad he waited - the Old Bridge was absolutely perfect for us, although he admits he was a little antsy the first 5 days in Dubrovnik.

What I'm trying to say is if you don't find the perfect place in Munich, then I'd urge you to wait until Hohenschwangau if you think it would be perfect - as hard as waiting might be! It's one of those memories you take to the grave with you, and it would be a shame to have any regrets of, "Oh, if only I had waited another 48 hours to do it at a spot I know she would have just loved..."

Either way, though, good luck and congrats!

I would NOT "do" the Ludwig's castle trip. Been there and done that much to my chagrin. You get to see only about 5 rooms in the castle and that's after waiting for hours to get into the joint. Andechs Monastery trip is much closer/relaxing. The beer and scenery are very good. But getting there from the train station can be a real pain unless one takes a taxi. There's a Saturday beer garden in the Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, with 3 breweries offering free mugs of their beer up until noon. Many fine tasting sausage/cheese/food stands. That was fun to visit. There are over 180 beer gardens in the greater Munich area so get your drinking hat on and have a few. The Augustiner brand (made only for the city of Munish) is great tasting.

I'm not sure what this says about me, but I wouldn't mind being proposed to at the Hofbrauhaus.....

As the lyrics go: "So schön ist's im Hofbräuhaus."

If you can get out of Munich for a bit, I'd suggest any spot along the Romantic Road. That would make a great story to tell grandkids - that grandpa proposed to grandma on the Romantic Road. :)

One suggestion comes from Frommer's: Best Spot for a Romantic Dinner in Munich: At this great Italian restaurant, Acquarello (tel. 089/470-4848), he or she will definitely say yes to your proposition. Classical music sets the stage for a romantic evening, and the host promises that the perfumelike fragrance of the restaurant will linger for a lifetime. From figs to almonds, the food is from the gods -- at least that.

Another website recommends these places: http://www.toytowngermany.com/munich/romantic_restaurants.html
