Roissy bus from CDG or RER?

Last year we took the RER from Orly and it was easy and cheap. However, the taxi line at Gare Nord was long and an hour+ wait. Plus the taxi to hotel in Latin Quarter was costly. We are considering the Roissy bus this trip to the Opera area and take taxi from there to hotel near Eiffel Tower. Another option would be to arrange for a shuttle. We arrive early (7 am) and want to get to the hotel as soon as possible-have only 4 days in Paris and want to not waste any time.

I am a fan of the Roissy bus. Cuts down on nerves and stress lugging the bags to and through the RER stops.

Susan - What time of the year will you be traveling? How much luggage will you have, ie Carry-on, Wheelie or Steamer trunk? I see you say your Hotel is near the Eiffel Tower, do you know which metro stop? Taking the RER from CDG to Ecole Militaire will cost 8.60 euro and take about 1 hour. I've never taken the Roissy Bus, but several people on this site recommend it.

Joel~We will arrive in Paris on May 24. Two 22" roller boards plus small carryons(these attach to rbs)-not feather weight but manageable. So how close to Ecole Militaire does the RER get? We are staying at Hotel Champs du Mars and that is our metro stop. The price sounds right. No problem with luggage on the RER as everyone has it and most everyone was very patient/tolerant.

Susan - Your route to Ecole Militaire is the same route our family took in 09. Take the RER-B from CDG to Gare du Nord direction Massy-Palaiseau. From Gard du Nord take Metro line 4 to Strasbourg-Saint-Denis direction Porte d'Orleans. At Strasbourg-Saint-Denis take Metro lin 8 to Ecole Militaire direction Balard. You will have to do a little walking in Gard Nord, but it is very manageable. To get to you hotel from the Ecole Militaire metro station, Walk straight ahead to Avenue Bosquet. Turn right on Avenue Bosquet and proceed to Rue du Champ de Mars(about 200 meters). Turn right on Rue du Champ de Mars and your hotel is ahead on the right(about 100 meters). If you go to Google you will see how close your hotel is to the metro station.

I vote for Roissybus to Opera, then 5 stops on the metro b/n Opera and Ecole Militaire... If you stand in front of the Opera building (using Google Maps Street View), you can see the bus stop on the left side of the building (for Roissybus and city buses). The Opera metro station is on a little island in front of the Opera building. You can't miss it, unless it's surrounded by plywood (construction)! In that case, go to the big, wooden box LOL! Descend the stairs, then take the metro line 8 Dir: Balard for 5 stops to 'Ecole Militaire'. Frankly, the stop 'La Tour Maubourg' is just about the same distance from your hotel; maybe try getting on or off there sometime - it's in a pretty area. After finally trying Roissybus on my last visit, I'm hooked. The seats are cushy, the bus/van is air conditioned/heated, there are luggage racks, there are no stops, and best of all you get to drive through Parisian neighborhoods! Unless RER really makes more sense, I'll always take Roissybus. The ride will cost €9,40 (at the time of my trip, you could purchase the tickets from the driver - IF you have the exact change or something very close, or be prepared to let the driver keep the change...you don't have to bother with finding somewhere to buy the tickets in the airport). You'll need to buy metro tickets at the Opera metro station, but that definitely beats The Ordeal of buying them at CDG! And this route avoids transfers and all of those stairs...unless you really like stairs...;-) (cont.)

(cont.) I had to stop before I could finish...but I'm back: OR, you could take the RER B Dir: Robinson to the Saint-Michel Notre Dame stop, then take RER C Dir: Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to the Invalides stop. THERE, you can either take metro line 8 Dir: Balard to Ecole Militaire, or simply walk from the Invalides RER stop...it would be a nice stretch-your-legs stroll if the weather's nice! You might prefer this route if you're going back to CDG airport...the Roissybus has to contend with traffic...

Thanks for replies. All will be considered-don't mind a bit of walking with luggage but stairs are a hassle. AF bus will be looked into. We will not be returning to CDG (hotel gets shuttle for that) but are heading to Burgundy and Provence for two weeks and then on to Switzerland.

Do you have RS Paris guide book yet? If so, good. If not you should get one ASAP as it was very helpful for us getting from the airport to our hotel using the Roissy bus plus metro. Good luck and happy travels.

I agree with Eileen. Roissy bus to Opera and the #8 metro from Opera toward Balard. Just did this last week. The Metro stations have elevators if you look closely and are too tired to manage the stairs but
you will get a burst of energy at the needed moment.
