Have you recently been at the Rodin? If I understand correctly, you can visit the gardens only. I also saw a show where they were refurbishing The Thinker. Is it completed yet? We are going at the end of May and I was wondering if it is worth the trip.
Gee. I think the Rodin Museum is fantastic. There are beautiful pieces throughout, the setting is intimate and bright (it was his house) and you can wander at will. Gardens are a big draw for me, and those at the museum are lovely, but the museum is worth the trip without a rose. We have revisited several times.
Sandy, We were there in October and were able to tour the garden and the house. There was some construction barriers up on one side of the garden, but not sure what was going on.
I can't answer your question but I have been to the Rodin twice and have never been inside. For me, the gardens and outside sculture are worth seeing, and in late May, the roses should be blooming. I do not recommend the outdoor cafe at the Rodin.
Have not been since 2010 but checked the Rodin Museum website http://www.musee-rodin.fr/en/plan-your-visit
and it seems that the museum is only closed 3 days of the year. Looks like the museum is being renovated but is still open. Good Luck
Covered by the Museum Pass. Even if "The Thinker" is under repair there are several terrific other pieces in the garden. I found the interior tour interesting (worth 40 minutes) but have only gone in once. The gardens are the real draw. Excellent bistro between the metro stop and Musee Rodin on BD Des Invalides. Museum is within walking distance of Hotel des Invalides and the short guys tomb. Entrance is on Ave de Tourville. Left out of the Rodin Museum on Rue de Varenne, left onto BD des Invalides, right onto Ave de Tourville.
Sandy, sorry I don't know the status of "The Thinker" in the gardens at the Rodin Museum except that it was not being refurbished last August when I was there. Even if "The Thinker" is under wraps the rest of the sculpture and the garden itself (especially in late May) is definitely worth going to - gardens are the best part in my opinion (only 1 euro) however I haven't been inside for about 15 years. Agree that the cafe in the gardens is not the best for food, but worth a stop for ice cream or drinks.
We like the gardens very much, many sculptures besides the Thinker (what is he thinking about anyway to need refurbishing?), and the setting is beautiful even if the house is closed. Not being Rodin fanatics we were a bit underwhelmed by the inside, I do remember a lot of very creaky floors that made you quite aware of how crowded it was. The cafe was OK for us, not a great meal but perfectly adequate for a sit-down snack in the garden. Only one euro to get in the garden, perhaps the greatest bargain in Paris.
Thank you for your replies. We spent a lot of time there in 2009 as my husband is interested in sculpture. The rose garden in the spring is more my style. Last time it was September and I don't think anything was blooming. I will put it back on the itinerary.
The garden is fantastic - one of favorite pieces - The Burghers of Calais is there - it alone is worth a visit - such a compelling story. Be certain to have some explanation & interpretation of this statue with you when looking - it will bring this statue to life. The interior has a few major pieces and many, many "studies" of his large works. If you are not a huge fan of sculpture of this style just visit the garden.
I was at the Rodin last Friday (3/29/13) and the Museum is open as are the gardens. There was no work being done on the Thinker, and he is excellently situated for photos. :) There is some work going on around the gardens and museum, but the have a temporary exhibit in the front to showcase some of the peices that are not viewable due to the improvements being made. We paid the extra to go into the museum, but I would have been fine with the gardens only. My husband was very pleased with the museum as it is not just the Artists works but also items from his personal collection (such as some Van Gogh paintings). If you have the time and the euros, the museum doesn't take long and you are there anyway, it doesn't hurt to take a quick trip through it.
