We are driving from Sarlat to Pech Merle for a caves visit timed entrance at 10:00 a.m., and will be continuing south afterwards. Would it be worth getting an earlier start from Sarlat to simply drive by Rocamadour to see it from afar, even though we won't have time to visit there?
Yep, you'll drive by the bottom. That's the place you have to go in order to really appreciated it anyway.
Rocamadour is an amazing sight, and I agree with Ed that it's best seen from the bottom. But don't underestimate how long it takes to get to and from there, the local roads can be slow.
Sounds like it's worth getting an early start just to take a gander...from a distance, to get the best view. Thanks!
The bottom view is nice, but there's a spot across the valley that has the classic view (every guidebook will point you there). I actually enjoyed this view more than I enjoyed the town, which is touristy-tacky (everything is a souvenir shop) and crowded. So don't feel bad about not walking up. This is the view I mean:

definitely worth it. i drove to the top of the cliff where you can get nice pictures of the villages with the rock, pretty amazing! there is trail you can hike down to the village from the parking lot. it shouldn't take you very much time to walk the village and check out the church, if you walk fast can do in about 2-3 hrs.
Rocamador: Allow yourself time and be prepared to be flexible. We really enjoyed Rocamador (arrived late afternoon, left mid morning) and didnt notice "touristy" at all. After seeing it from afar you will probably be tempted to linger a little to get up close and personal. Seeing them hauling luggage up the cliff on a rope and pulley system was fascinating
