Road-tripping in Spain & Portugal in December-January

We plan to do a road trip to Spain and Portugal from Stuttgart, Germany from mid Dec through early January. Our concern is the weather during that time of year. Will we be better off going elsewhere? This is our rough itinerary;

Barcelona - Valencia- Madrid- Granada- Arcos de la Frontera- Seville - (Portugal)the Algarve - Lisbon - Fatima - Salamanca - Bilbao - Lourdes - Home

Any advice and recommendations will be much appreciated.

Thanks. Lilian

You may find some snow in the higher elevations in the north towards the end of the journey. To reduce that chance (altho the snow is rarely bad), I would suggest a slight adjustment to your itinerary. Do Barcelona - Valencia- Granada- Arcos de la Frontera- Seville - (Portugal)the Algarve - Lisbon - Fatima - Salamanca - Madrid - Bilbao - Lourdes - Home. This is more logical from a driving point of view (rather than going Valencia to Madrid then "back-tracking" to Granada) and will allow you to stay on better roads from Salamanca thru Madrid and up to Bilbao, mostly avoiding the mountains north of Madrid. Be aware, as well, that you will likely run into rain, especially from a line Salamanca-Madrid and north.

Are you planning to rent the car in Germany and drop it off in Span or Portugal when you're done? If so, check to see if they are going to ding you with a big drop-off fee.

Hi David, We live in Stuttgart, so we're driving there and back. That's why we're doing the big loop.

Thanks Norm, for the suggestion. We'll take your advice and head straight to Granada from Valencia.
