Road trip

Planning a trip in sept. Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Vienna-Munich-Heidelburg-Frankfurt in 14days. Interested in seeing the small towns as well as cities. Is this reasonable?

No! Assuming you arrive on day 1, jet-lag will make it difficult to see much of Berlin. Assuming you fly out of Frankfurt in the morning on day 14, you really have only 12 full days, 13 including the jet-lagged first day. You have 7 cities to see and 6 travel days, so each city is one full day and whatever is left of the day getting there. That's not really enough to see those cities, let alone visit small towns as well. Your schedule would look like this: 1 arrive, see Berlin 2 Berlin-Dresden 3 See Dresden 4 Dresden-Prague 5 See Prague 6 Prague-Vienna 7 See Vienna 8 Vienna-Munich 9 See Munich 10 Munich-Heidelberg 11 See Heidelberg 12 Heidelberg-Frankfurt 13 See Frankfurt
14 Leave Changing accommodations every other day would be taxing for an experienced traveler. You have to pack, check out, travel, find your next accommodation, check in, unpack. Those additional times add up.

Well with less than 2 days per stop, not counting side trips, with all the stops fairly distant from each other, not counting travel time... by my standards, not really.... Have you done previous trips to Germany to account for the flying visits? Or is this to check off a bunch of places? Train, car, or time-turner? That's quite a lot of miles...

Thanks so much for your reply. How many days do we need for this trip or what should we eliminate?

Carol, its not really for us to say what to leave out because we don't know why you want to go to the places you listed - what we might leave out may be your hot-button. All I can say, and I agree with Lee, is that you have too much and too far for the available time. Perhaps you could go into a bit more detail? Again - car or train? Which small towns?

To do this exact run, not including travel time which must be considered, to do a decent job properly seeing these cities and their areas I would suggest Berlin- 4 days Dresden- 2 days Prague- 4 days Vienna- 5 days Munich- 3 days or to include Bavaria a week Heidelburg- 1 day or 2 Frankfurt - 2 days or to include the wonderful areas nearby a week

I don't mind whirlwind trips, but if you are driving...as I assume you are, you called it road trip...this might be a bit of a nightmare. I do a lot of driving while I am traveling, but you have listed all cities..., and no villages at all. A car can tend to be a problem in Prague, Vienna, Berlin, Munich... If it were my trip and I wanted to explore the countryside and villages I would change up the agenda and eliminate about half of the cities. You could have a car for a part of the trip, but only if it will add to the enjoyment of your trip. I love driving the countryside of Germany and would be happy bypassing a few of the cities in favor of some village time.

I agree with the other posters. Referring to Nigel's minimums, I agree with them in principle, but I could take a day off many of them if I were pressed for time (for instance, allotting 3 days for Prague instead of 4). But you certainly have to allot a lot more than 14 days to see 7 cities. And if you want to add side trips, you need even more. Most important of all, you have to allow travel time. The rule of thumb is that for even the closest cities, you have to allow a half day for the change (checking out of hotel, getting to station, taking train, getting from station to hotel, checking in). For longer journeys, you "lose" more of the day. And Terry has the most important point of all. If you want to see these cities, a car is the last thing you want; you'd want to take the train. Driving be a huge hassle in cities, and parking expensive, and much of the time you'll be paying to leave the car in a lot (possibly outside the city center) and take mass transit within a city. As for what to cut or what side trips to add, if you put why you picked these particular places, we can give better advice (with the proviso that for every place, you will find people who loved it, people who hated it, and everything in between). If you only have 14 days, pick 4 large places maximum, and see them properly. That way, you can decide on each day if you want to take a day trip to a smaller town, or stay in your base city. If you're overnighting in smaller places, you can have more bases (for example, you can do Heidelberg and Dresden in 1-2 nights each, then move on - or, if you want a shorter visit, you can see them as day trips from Frankfurt and Berlin, respectively).
