road classification

We are going to stay in the Beaune area of Burgundy for a few days for the first time. We are considering a B and B near a "D" road. Are "D" roads basically a typical country road or are they busy and major byways?

Mary.. All the roads in France are first rate. The D road is not a tollway, but a smewhat smaller road- not a back road. It is very easy to drive the backroads around Beaune. We have driven between there and Chateauneuf. The Burgundy canal is lovely. One suggestion- take a France map- but when you get to Beaune or wherever in Burgundy , get a regional map. It will show many more little fun roads. The back roads in France are in perfect condition and they have picnic tables where you gan get out of the car and have lunch and take a walk-- they do not care if you wak or hike around. When are you going? That area is lovely in the Fall. We are going for the month of October. Will be staying in Montreal for a week and at the Domaine de Serrigny on the Canal.

Mary - If I compared a D Road to Chuckanut Drive with villages along the way, would that help you? N Roads are generally divided; D roads are two lanes.

We will be staying near Chalon-sur-Saone. I just basically wanted to be sure we weren't going to be staying adjacent to a major highway and the accompanying noise. Your comments have helped, thanks!
