I will be about 4 days on the Riviera... Travel agent is recommending staying in Cannes (nice sand) and taking a few tours to see Provence countryside, Eze, etc. ... I'm wondering if Nice or a less commercial spot, Juan Les Pins? would be better, not sure I care about the pebbles on the beach... And are tours nice, or can we see it all, or mostly, via bus and trains?
I find Cannes to be really pretentious and simply overcrowded and over-priced for me. I also do not care for Nice if you are going for a beach. Its nice to walk along the Promenade, but the pebbles are annoying. I prefer a small beach town between Nice and Cannes called Ste. Maxime. It does have a sand beach as well as nice shopping, restaurants, a market as well as an old Carousel on the beach. I always have a car so cannot speak to train or bus travel, but there must be some.
Cannes is one of the less interesting places on the Riviera. If you are in Nice, you can do a lot of day trips to wonderful places by bus and train. I'm always in a car with family who live in the area, so I don't pay attention to how we get places. You should go to your local library and look through the guide books to the area for a better idea. Juan les Pins is a bit like Bel Air in LA. If you re-word your title to where to stay, you'll get a lot of excellent suggestions.
Le Lavandou has nice beach (no pebbles), is not pretentious and laid back compared to Nice/Cannes. You'll need a car to get to the Luberon if you're going inland for the countryside.
