Rick steves advice

On one of Rick's shows he suggested a river tour either on the Mosel or the Rhine and said that this short day trip held the most castles and was the best part of a longer more expensive river cruise - I can't remember where he said this originated from, do any of you know the program I refer to? can you tell me where this river trip originated from and did he say which river boat firm he used? any info would be appreciated. - Nova

Thank you so much Angela. Hope your trip is great and I would be happy to hear from you after your return to see what your thoughts are. Do send me a private email if you wish at that time.
Looking forward to it!! - Nova

I'd go a little further and do Rudesheim to St. Goar. You will see a lot of castles and the trip is just wonderful.

You can also go free on your birthday - just show a passport.

Probably the Rhine/Mosel episode of his show a few years ago?

Thanks for the info all. I was planning to base my self in/near Bacharach for a few days and spend one night in the castle hostel the rest in a hotel, any suggestion for an inexpensive hotel in that area? - is this a good idea for a base on the Mosel/Rhine area? - nova

Nova,

We leave this Monday for our first trip to the Rhine and Mosel regions, and are basing ourselves in Bacharach for a few days. While I clearly cannot say for sure how this pension is until after our trip, we've booked our stay in Bacharach at the Pension im Malerwinkel. It's listed in Rick's book, we're paying €53/night (incl breakfast) for a double, and the email communication has been very efficient, leaving me with a very good feeling about the place. As an added bonus, I recently saw Lee, one of our resident Germany gurus, recommend the place, which adds even more credence to our choice (thanks, Lee!).

I'm not sure if you have access to Rick's book yet, so here are his Bacharach choices and their price category/contact info:

$$$ Rhein Hotel: www.rhein-hotel-bacharach.de

$$ Hotel Kranenturm: www.kranenturm.com

$$ Pension im Malerwinkel: www.im-malerwinkel.de

$$ Pension Binz: [email protected]

$ Hotel Hillen: [email protected]

$ Pension Lettie: [email protected]

$ Pension Winzerhaus: [email protected]

$ Orth Zimmer: (tel only) 06743/1557

$ Jugendherberge Stahleck (hostel): www.diejugendherbergen.de

Good luck!

Thanka Ron for your info. I like the look of your St Goar hotel but I already emailed to book one in Bacharach.

Do you have a suggestion for a resonable hotel in the Schwangau Baveria area or should I look for something in Fussen? but I like being in the rural - I was thinking of the Alpenhotel Meier there but don't know if it has easy acces to teh rails or maybe the bus? Can anyone help me with that area?
thanks- Nova
