Rhine Trip

I am greatly looking forward to a Rhine River trip with my fiance, and wanted to know if anyone knew of any live music pubs anywhere near Saint Goar or Bacharach? I want local music, not polished, impersonal shows. Also, which is a favorite, must-see castle or village?

Can you define "local" music? If you mean the Bavarian stuff, this would not be local at all. Or do you mean what is commonly called "schlager" music? This is what the old people listen too all the time. It would be equivalent to me listening to Lawrence Welk. Or do you want German rap or German hip-hop, cause that is pretty local, since the kids rap about their home towns a lot. This is quite popular now.

What would be local music for Saint Louis?

I'm reminded of the old Beck's bier commercials. Germans don't do music, Germans do beer (and wine along the Rhine). LOL

I travel shoulder season and can't remember any music in Bacharach or St. Goar. I'm sure during festivals there will be some.

In German clubs/beerhalls/bars, I've seen rock bands, oompah bands and djs. I've never seen something along the line of traditional sessions in a pub like in Ireland.

Your best bet may be to look for street musicians in cities like Koln, Bonn or Munich. They are often very talented. I would guess many, if not all, of the street musicians aren't local but come from former Eastern block countries (I may be wrong).

One other thing I really enjoyed that may be good for you. The churches and cathedrals have choirs (and choir practices), I've really enjoyed those rare occasions when I visit an empty gothic cathedral and the choir is practicing. The sound reverberating through the building is haunting (in a good way).

Thanks so much for all of your responses. Local music for me can be of any genre, from church cathedral music to rock. I probably would not like the Lawrence Welk variety, though.

Have you tried looking at the tourist board websites for each of the towns you are going to. These would most likely list any kind of events or even the churches of the area. Many churches will list their concerts too.

Here are a couple of websites that might help. The castle one is in German, but if your click on the castle it goes to the individual websites that will be in English.

This is a calendar of events in the different towns of Hessen.
