Rhine river trip

I am looking at a river cruies from Brussels to Strassbourg the last two weeks of October. What is the weather like? Is it cold and damp?

Brussels is not on the Rhine... But to answer the second part of your question... damper than Albuquerque, but October is statistically the dries month of the year for NW Europe. Temperatures can range from cool to warm.

It would be better the first two weeks of October. In late October I would expect cold. Based on my experience, September in very nice. Somewhere around the middle of October it turns cold. I'm sure turning to cold varies a little each year but I think it's a safe bet you will experience cold weather. One year we had really nice weather in early October (almost t-shirts and shorts weather). About the 14th it turned really cold. It was clear (foggy mornings) but probably in the high 20's. We stopped at a department store and bought ski caps, gloves and scarves to augment our limited cold weather gear.

Two reports are only anectdotal, but: Last year in the last half of October I was chipping thick ice off the windshield in Aachen and when I got down into the gorge close to mid-day people off of the boats and buses were walking around completely miserable. At about the same time (maybe closer to mid-October)the year before, two of us where huddled in the car waiting for a terminal to open about fourty miles west of Mannheim. I turned the heater on when frost started to cover the windows. Edit: 'The Rhine cruise season is pretty much over by the end of October.' There are numerous Rhine cruises that start as late as the last week of November and extend into December.

Umm... no. I've never taken a Rhine cruise, but I've driven the length of the gorge several times. I agree with Ed, you can see day cruise boats along the Rhine well into December.

Dare I say that KD does not own the Rhine. Dare I say that I post from what I see, not what I cite. Dare I say that Tom lives ten miles from the river and has posted from what he sees. I once read a book about artillery, about which I have absolutely no knowlege, but there was an interesting sequence that, paraphrased, went something like this: Shot 'Miss. Adjust.' Shot 'Miss again. Adjust.' Shot 'Miss again. Battlesights zero. Level tubes. Fire the final protective fires.'
