I am taking my family (incl. a teen and a kid) to Germany and Italy next summer. I want to include a Rhine River cruise/tour. Any suggestions where the nicest places are?
In my opinion, and Rick's too, I think, the most interesting part of the Rhein is between Bacharach and St. Goar. That part includes the Loreley, which is really just a big cliff, and the Pfalzgrafenstein, the mid-river toll castle. Anywhere you go on the Rhein, you will see quint towns and castles on the sides of the gorge. You can see them on this section, too, but the Loreley and Pfalzgrafenstein are unique. The trip up the river (NW to SE) takes about 70 minutes. I got bored. If I did it again, I would start in Bacharach and go down the river, with the current, to St. Goar (40 min). If you really like boats, you can go down the river to Braubach and tour the Marksburg castle.
I agree with Lee, especially with kids, the shorter the better. We did the same Bacharach/St. Goar stretch (not sure if it was the long way or the short way) last summer, and that was plenty for my two teens. Actually, I wish we had just spent that time exploring one of the castles.
