Rhine/Mosel place to stay

Our trip is in late may and we will have a car and be arriving from Weinsberg. We have three nights before departing from Frankfurt in the mid-morning. My question is where we should stay to enjoy the Rhine and Mosel areas. We like small towns, biking and hiking. I've been looking at Bacharach, Sainte Goar, Beilstein. Do we need to stay at the airport in Frankfurt? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I stayed at the Rhein Hotel in St Goar and loved it. I would ask for the room with the outside balcony, if it's available. The owner, Gil, is a trained chef and will gladly cook for you upon request. He is also an expert in the local sights, especially the ones that aren't in the guidebooks.

Many of the apartments in this area will rent for as little as 3 days. We stayed in an apartment in St. Goar and really enjoyed it. We walked and took the train during most of the 5 days we were there. You can take a train to the airport in Frankfurt easily from the St. Goar area in about an hour.

I usually choose budget lodging options. In the area I've stayed at the St. Goar hostel (fairly average place, not bad but not special), Burg Stahleck (one of the nicest hostels I've visited but always booked up, reserve ahead), and a couple of pensions. Anywhere will be walking distance from the train station (Stahleck and the Hotel by Rheinfels are a long walk). It's doable to train to Frankfurt from there to catch your plane - sounds like you will have to start early though - I'd choose that over a stay at an airport hotel. Pensions all over Germany have a very high standard, comfortable beds and clean. I'm not sure if any offer ensuites, I always go for a bath down the hall (normally a sink in your room).

We would recommend the Im Malerwinkel in Bacharach. The rates are wonderful, the people better and the rear rose garden is delightful.
