I have read conflicting reports on how easy it is to get on & off the KD boats to explore the villages. On 5/21, I will be staying the night in Cologne. In the morning of 5/22, I will catch a train to arrive in Bingen at 8:58. The KD high season schedule is here:

You seem to have a handle on it. And there is one more boat, the paddlewheeler Geothe, leaving Bacharach at 5:15 pm. So, in Bacharach you will have the option of staying 1, 2, 5, or 7 hours, and the later you stay, the fewer options you will have left. I might suggest spending 2 hours in Bacharach, then getting back on at 12:15 and going to St. Goar (12:55) to see Rheinfels castle until 3:55 pm.

Instead of Koblenz, I now think we will either leave from Boppard or Braubach to return to Cologne. Do either of those towns still have cafes open and people walking around until 930?
