Rhine in Flames

Has anyone been to the Rhine in Flames and, if so, is it worth seeing the event as a cruise? Since most of the cruises I have seen cost 50-100 euros/person for the "Night of Mega Lights" on August 8, I was wondering if viewing the show from Koblenz would be nearly as spectacular and a lot less expensive.

Yes, many times when I was stationed in Germany, from the banks of St. Goar. They have a big fest and the fireworks are wonderful...I almost said "awesome"-lol. Last year I was there, a friend and I were booked to go on one of the cruises but we got bumped by a group of officers and their wives. Really ticked me off.

I'm taking my kids back to Germany this summer, in 2 months and we are going on one of the cruises on the 4th of July. I can't wait.

The problem with seeing it from the riverbank is you don't get to see all the castles and fireworks along the river. Don't know what it would be like in Koblenz but watching from St. Goar was great, there is Rhinefels on one side and another castle on the other side of the Rhine and they have a "battle" and then at the end they set the base of Rhinefels on "fire". Really cool.

Our cruise starts in Rudesheim goes up to St. Goar and back. It's from 7:30 pm till 12:30 am and includes dinner. I think it's worth the money. I think I paid about $50 a person.

I should say, "will pay" as I haven't actually paid for it, only booked it. Will pay when we pick up the tickets.

I thought this post was a joke. You see, I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where our river - the Cuyahoga - actually did catch fire!

Andrea, if you watch it from the riverbank it's like watching any professionally done fireworks in any beautiful scenery. But seeing it from the water is quite different and makes it pretty unique. Yes, it is expensive but then again, you don't have to do it every year...
