Rhine a Flame cruise

Has anyone been of one of them? I had booked one for a friend and me years ago through a travel center on base. We never got to go because a bunch of officers and their wives managed to get them to knock us and whoever else off the tour so they could go. Still ticks me off to this day! It was the last cruise of the year, during the last year I was stationed there. My fault, I guess for not booking sooner, but still. Now I know I may have gone down to the cruiseline myself and booked, but back then I didn't know that. Grrr!

So, I've only seen the Rhine Aflame fireworks/festival from the banks of St. Goar. This cruise is the one thing I'm most looking forward to, only thing is the boat carries 1000 people on board! When the guy told me that (I called KD in Germany the other day), I nearly freaked out. 1000 people eating dinner and looking at the fireworks for five hours on the same boat? I know it's a big boat but I can't even imagine. Has anyone done this before? I'm not going to cancel but just wanted to know what to expect, do they do the dinner in shifts?

Haven't been on one myself but found the dockside food and entertainment excellent and the views from there were great too - and we got to watch all the cruise boats passing by too!

Hello:
Barbara and I enjoyed the Rein en Flamen fireworks festival in September 2007. This was on the front end of a RS Germany Austria Switzerland tour that started in St Goar.

In October 2006 I researched this event on line. The company had an excellent web site. The only problem was fining the St Goar event among the other fireworks festivals offered by the company. We tried to book the boat trip and dinner for two. We selected dinner choices but the web site only charged us for the cruise – not dinner. It accepted our credit card.

I got an e mail confirmation shortly after the purchase. Later, maybe in May I received an e-mail asking if we wanted dinner. I said yes. They said they would charge us on the boat. In August we received tickets by mail.
We boarded the boat in Bacharach - its last pick up point before St. Goar. The boat was completely full. Someone escorted us to our table where seats had been reserved. There we were, two first time American tourists, on a two deck party boat with 500 Germans. The people at our table put up with our poor German language skills. They were kind and eventually spoke to us in English. While waiting for dinner we purchased drinks – had to buy tokens to exchange for drinks.

About 10 minutes later the boat stopped at Oberwessel for a street wine festival. We had one hour to enjoy half chickens and other street vendor food and drink. What a great time! This was one of the highlights of our 16 day trip. Once again on board the boat, we returned to our dinner table. It was empty. We went out to the open area at the stern of the boat and found two seats at a large round table. No one at the table for 10 spoke English. No problem. We offered polite words in German, they smiled and we all enjoyed our drinks and had a great time. We never went back to the dining room for dinner.

Continued from previous post:

Fifteen minutes later the boat cued up with 40 other large party boats. There were about four rows of boats - all anchored in the center of the river. The fireworks show was amazing. Charges went off from both sides of the river. Castles were lit up with their own fireworks displays. The best fireworks I have ever seen. It went on for more than 45 minutes.

After the fireworks there was live music, disco dancing and more drinks on board the boat. We almost missed our stop in St. Goar.

You must see this fireworks festival from a party boat.
It was more than worth the money. You will not be able to find rooms in St Goar to see this from the river bank! The next day the RS tour started in St Goar and no one in the group had seen the fireworks. Please reserve seats as early as you can – without dinner.

Best regards,

Barbara and James

PS: We spent that Saturday night in Bacharach. If we do it again we will arrive on Friday – not Saturday morning. That Saturday was a bit long because we had left Colorado Friday and arrived in Frankfurt Saturday morning. We still had a great time. The RS GAS tour was wonderful

Jim, I've seen the fireworks more than once from St. Goar, which is why I wanted to take the cruise. Like my post said, I'm already booked, for dinner and the cruise. I faxed them my information and they mailed me back a confirmation.

The cruise starts in Rudeshiem and goes up to St. Goar and back. It's from 7:30 pm to 12:30 am. They didn't mention getting off the boat at any point, so not sure this one does or maybe they all do?

I'm still trying to find a hotel in Rudeshiem.
