Reutte or Garmsich

I had on my itinerary staying 2 nights in Garmisch on our way to visit friends in Ebersberg then staying 2 nights in Reutte on our way back to Zurich. I now noticed they are about 30 minutes apart. Any suggestions of what do? I could take out one of them, but which one? Should I stay 3 nights in 1 of the places and visit that whole area???
PS- I dont like being rushed so I dont travel fast.

Garmisch is well known and well respected. Have you read anybody other than Rick who recommends Reutte?
Sometimes Rick has some odd ideas that he cant get out of his book (dont we all)

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a famous resort town that offers everything from jetset spas, rustic chalets, eating options that range from world class to mom and pop, amazing hiking, cycling, skiing and water sports, etc. Reutte is known mainly because Rick Steves uses it as a logistics base for visiting Ludwig's castles. It's not a bad place, just very ordinary. Guess which town I prefer?

Thanks for the help. The main thing I want to is hike and got to the top of the Zugspitze, sounds like Garmisch is the place for me!!! BTW- I would never go to McDonalds when I travel, I dont even like to go in the states:)
Hotel Tannenhof in Reutte looks great though!!! Maybe I will have to do both.

I stopped in Reutte for a couple of hours for lunch last year on my way to Pfronten. That was enough of Reutte for me. The main part of town is old and industrial. Maybe the outlying areas are nicer (although Zum Schluxen is just over the ridge from what looks like a gravel quarry). Then I stayed 2 nights in Pfronten, which I first went through on my way to Füssen in 2002 and liked it so much I came back. I didn't stay in Aggenstein, but I liked the looks from the outside enough to look in and liked the inside, too. Aggenstein is right on a bus stop that takes you to Pfronten-Ried Bhf, from which there are frequent buses to Füssen and trains to Garmisch.

I have stayed in both places. I have been to Garmisch many times and would return there. Reutte was OK. The hotel was one of my favorites, but that was about it. We found a pizza restaurant to eat dinner.. It was good.
We did a great hike out of Garmich. If I had to do it again I would take the ski lift up and hike down. Hiking up just about killed me. LOL The bowl of soup at the top saved me!

I will go on record as saying I would stop at a McDonald's overseas. Sometimes, you just gotta have those fries!

OK fine, dont tell anyone but on our last trip we did go to a McDonalds in Rosenheim Germany. It was the nicest I have ever been to... Good thinking on reading another book- SO true, Rick is the only Ruette fan I know of and Im over castles from our last time so I dont need to see Neuschwanstein. Then tell me this- where should we stay our last couple days. Were leaving out of Zurich and will be in Switzerland at the beginning of our trip... What about Appenzell? I was considering that too. I need a place close enough to catch our 1:30pm flight from Zurich. (preferably 1-3 hours from Zurich) Help!!!

Garmisch, Oberamergau, Mittenwald area is so nice to drive through and wander through. However, close to Zurich I would have to suggest Lucerne (probably no more than and hour by train to Zurich airport) or any one of the little Swiss towns between Germany and Lucerne. They looked wonderful zipping past them on the train.
