Reutte or Füssen (or someplace else)?

A friend and I are traveling to Germany in early Sept. We will be in Munich for a couple of days and are then renting a car.

My latest thought is this - after picking up the rental car in Munich, I was thinking of driving to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and spending the night there. Then the next day, drive down towards the Füssen area to see the sights there, and spend the night (or perhaps 2 nights).

At first, I was planning on us staying in Füssen, but then saw Rick Steve's chapter on Reutte, Austria, which seemed like a nice alternative. However, I've since seen some posts here that indicate a lot of travelers aren't crazy about the town.

The problem is that my friend really wants to spend at least a period of time (even a half day, or one night) in Austria, so I'm trying to figure out how to do that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a place to base ourselves in for 1-2 nights in that area? Preferably some place either in Austria or conveniently located to an interesting Austrian town?

I'm one of the people who was not particularly impressed with downtown Reutte. I would much rather stay in Pfronten, a few miles up the valley but over the border in German. If you have to stay in Austria, however, Zum Schluxen, in Pinswang, outside Reutte, looks nice. I haven't found public transportation to it, but with a car, it should be accessible.

Fernpass looked nice to me, although it is VERY rural, and makes Reutte look like a metropolis by comparison. I've enjoyed Ehrwald, but I was there in the winter for skiing. Not sure what it's like outside the winter sports season.

Well, this is all good to know. I looked at the website for Zum Schluxen and it looks like a nice place. I've emailed them to ask about availability. Thanks for the info!

I’ll recommend this very nice but reasonably-priced hotel with balconies looking toward the mountains in quiet Breitenwang, right next to Reutte: www.hotel-moserhof.at

Great restaurant without outdoor seating next to large back lawn of property and view of mountains.

Ruined hilltop castles are nearby.

Unless you're flying out of Munich, go to the Fuessen area first and then to Rothenburg to avoid backtracking. Reutte doesn't have a lot of things to do but I think it's a very pretty place to spend the night. I sat on the balcony of my hotel one evening and just looked at the mountains and the gliders floating around. Very relaxing and absolutely beautiful. I'll be in Fussen in early Sept. and will be staying in Schwangau so we'll be close to the castles, the gondola, the spa as well as just a couple of minutes from Fussen. Having said that, this is one of the few places I'm content to just relax and enjoy the scenery. Be sure and take the Tegelberg gondola up the mountain. Breathtaking!

Except for some of the shops and a McDonalds in Reutte, I don't prefer to stay in the town. I enjoy the area just south of Garmisch in Austria. The towns of Ehrwald and Lermoos have a lot of zimmers/pensions with beautiful views of the Zugspitze. Chair lifts take you up other mountains in the area so you can hike. There is also a summer luge in the town of Biberwier--loads of fun, although I don't know how late into the summer season they are open. From this valley you have awesome views of the Zugspitze. You can also go to the top on a cable car from this Austrian side of the mountain. Have fun on your trip!
