Reutte: Did we miss something??

Back in October we went to Reutte for the afternoon as part of our Neuschwanstein day before heading back to the GAP area. We stopped downtown on the main pedestrian street and had cake/coffee at a nice cafe (even saw a couple thumbing through their Rick Steve's book at a neighboring table) and looked at each other and said, 'Is this it?!?'.

We had driven by the Ehrenburg site a few times since the highway goes RIGHT next to it and scrapped it since we could see it was super steep and we planned to spend the rest of our hiking energy back on the GAP mountains where the scenery was much grander. Is there a section of Reutte that we missed, something super cute, etc?? It looked like a regular post-war town, no fachwerkhauses, nothing special whatsoever. I live in a small university town with a beautiful Altstadt here in Germany and none of the 4 of us could figure out what made Reutte so charming/special. Anybody care to fill me in???

Hi juliette,

We went through/stopped in Reutte twice since 2001. I don't think you missed anything. We didn't see anything "special" about Reutte either and said the same thing to each other. We also passed on seeing the Ehrenburg ruins for the same reason that it looked "super steep". I figurd it's in Rick Steves' book simply as an alternative to staying in Fuessen. That's too bad... we loved Fuessen. Stayed there twice and we would stay again.

Nope, that's about it for Reutte. I'm not sure why Rick focuses in on Reutte. Like you said, it really isn't any different from dozens of other villages in the region (with the exception of the of all the Rickniks).

Some of Rick's choices (and then other towns he discourages) are headscratchers. I know Jo and others have expressed opinions on this (which I agree with.)

ok. good to hear from a few other folks that a similar experience was had. We really just used it as a pit stop, and I'm glad we didn't spend anymore time trying to find the attraction!

While I wouldn't recommend Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself, I can't recommend the region and towns around it enough, MUCH more atmosphere and charm! Much better home base for seeing the Ludwig Castles, etc.

Hi again juliette,

Same here. We did not care for G-P but we loved Mittenwald. The entire area is beautiful.

I have passed through this town many times and have never spent a night there. My young son likes the McDonald's and I've stopped at a few shops. There are other small, quaint towns in the area that are my favorites--not Reutte. Maybe Rick gets something in return for the promotion of this town in his books.

I haven't had a chance to explore the regions immediately around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but I did enjoy my brief stay in the town. It had a main street that was fun to walk down. On a warm summer day I can imagine it being a great place to relax, enjoying the beautiful scenery. We talked at dinner with a couple from Germany sharing our table, and they were spending a week in town. They'd go on hikes during the day, taking the lifts up into the mountain and then walking back down. I'd like to go back there again someday, and from the comments in this thread also explore some of the nearby towns.

Glad you said it and not me Denise.

I've also been there. Not horrible, but certainly nothing special.

I did hike the Ehrenburg ruins. We enjoyed it but it's definitely a steep hike. If you're at all concerned about your ability to to climb steep trails, you would be better off skipping it.
