Retiro Park, Madrid

Is the Retiro Park in Madrid safe for an older couple to visit during the day? Thank you!

Yes. It's a lovely park, and as safe as any in the US.

My husband and I (in our 50s) were there less than a year ago. It is very much like NYC's Central Park so the same type of safety rules apply. We went the day we arrived from the states as it was a beautiful place to see while getting used to the time change and trying to stay awake! It is huge, so wear your best walking shoes!

We were there last month and it is the nicest park we have been to in our travels.

Yes, we spent several hours there and felt very safe. On weekends the challenge is finding a part that is less crowded. I also recommend visiting the Botanic Garden which is next to Retiro. It is possibly the best botanic garden that I have visited, the plants very well labeled and the plant communities well organized. (check out the grape arbors of various wine varieties, near the restrooms). There is a fee to enter of about 3 euro, be sure to get the little newspaper by the ticket window because it contains the map.

Park Retiro is a great place to see the landscape as well as the people. On the weekends especially there will be mimes, artists, etc. A couple of decent places to grab a bite of food as well. The Glass Conservatory is outstanding. Beware of the "rosemary sellers" in the park and outside as well. They offer to give you a sprig of rosemary and then follow you to get you pay them. Also, in the park, and outside as well, do not offer to answer any questionaire or survey...these are usually scam artists/pick pockets. Lots of park benches on which to rest a while also. The Botanic Garden, adjacent to the Prado, is magnificent...flowers change with the seasons. Both of the above are two "musts" on each of my trips to Madrid. And, even with the cautions noted above, I would return without any hesitation.
