Can you recommend an inexpensive family restaurant near the Munich Marienplatz?
What about the Rathauskeller at the Rathaus tower or the famous Hofbrahaus or Augusinerkeller?
We liked the Augustiner am Dom Restaurant. It is typical heavy Bavarian fare. For me the beer was the best part. Prices moderate.
If you are looking for a bargain at lunch, consider the cafeteria atop the Galeria department store.

Ken,
I'm not sure that "inexpensive" and "Marienplatz" really go together? It's a bit of a touristy area, and the restaurants are priced accordingly. If your group has large appetites the Hofbrauhaus has a large buffet on the third floor, along with an "authentic" Bavarian show. I can't recall the exact price, but may have been about €15 per plate?
One restaurant that I really enjoyed was Opatija, which is on a side street just off Marienplatz. The food and service were both great! Have a look at This or This for some comments on the restaurant.
Happy travels!
The restaurant Donisl has always advertised itself as a reasonably-priced placed. It can be very crowded during the tourist season, but the food is pretty good.
As you face the Rathaus, it is on the left on the street (Wein Strasse)that runs along the left-hand side of the Rathaus.
We like the Hofbrauhaus and think the food is good. However, as an alternative to the sit-down restaurants, why not venture 40 steps over to the Viktualienmarkt which is just cram packed with vendors selling everything including food... We love walking around and choosing what we want to eat and then taking it to one of the many outdoor tables in the market to eat. It's really a blast.
Ken,
Our family loved the Hofbrahaus and found it pretty economical for the amount and quality of food. We expected this to be our cheesy touristy stop but it was much better. We sat on the main level at a table with several German couples and enjoyed the atomosphere and their company very much!
Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions! I forgot to mention that we're traveling the week after Christmas this year.
Just remember that many services and places are shut down between Christmas and New Years. Bus schedules are cut back. But the bier is always great.
