We are looking for traditional restaurants in Bernkastel,Moselle region Germany
Thanks Mike
We were there last month. We found a traditional looking Italian restaurant but were eventually disappointed so can't recommend. We walked around the town quite comprehensively but didn't find anything we would recommend. There was one hotel restaurant up high next to the grape vines but I'm sorry I didn't get the name. It looked OK. We actually liked the town quite a lot, just didn't like the crowds and tourist restaurants. The right bank was better than the left, although we found easy parking on the left.
I ate lunch in Bernkastel in 2008, schnitzel on toast with white asparagus strips and mushrooms on top, baked over with cheese. I have a picture of the restaurant in my personal pictures. I'll try to upload it to my website and post it here. I can't see the name, but maybe I have the receipt somewhere. It was about 3-4 blocks down the river, along the parallel road. Up date: The restaurant was called the "Alter Moselbahnhof" (Old Mosel train station) at Gestade 19. I don't think the name, Alter Moselbahnhof", is on the building, so I'll post the picture soon. It does look kind of like a train station, and it has the name, "Bernkastel-Kues" on the side. This is what the building looks like.
I cannot give you names of restaurants, since it has been a while, but we found much better food at better prices on the Kues side of the river than in the Bernkastel historic district. Bernkastel is prettier, but Kues is where the locals shop and eat. These observations are based on a visit in 2007, so they could be out of date now. In any case,an "authentic" German restaurant across from a (the?) pizza place was anything but authentic. The tipoff for me was that the Jaegerschnitzel (schnitzel with mushrooms) was coated with mushroom sauce that obviously came from a can (Campbell's?). One the other hand, an ordinary gasthous about a block from the river in Kues served one of the best (pork) schnitzels) I have ever eaten. And, of course, prices were much higher on the Bernkastel side. I realize that not everyone has the same experience, but my advice is to stroll through the historic side and buy your souvenirs there but walk across the bridge for a good meal.
