We will be driving from Salzburg to Venice during part of our trip in the end of July and would like to spend the night somewhere in between. (Possibly around Villach, but we're not locked into that.) In some ways, we'd like to have the flexibility to decide where to stay as we go that day. Looking for advice on whether we definitely should have a reservation or if we can "wing it." We'll have reservations for most nights of our trip. Any suggestions on nice areas to stay would also be great. Thanks!
Wing it - except in some touristy spots along the Wörther See that are popular with Austrians or folks not wishing to continue on to the Adriatic. Weekends are the only times where even in July some rooms may become scarce. But if you aren't dead-set on Villach, you can always continue on to Tarvisio which in some aspects is prettier. You can also stop short and stay in Millstatt, which lies in a pretty Alpine valley.
I'd steer clear of Velden, Faak and Pörtschach; all are big summer tourist draws.
Thanks so much for the great advice! It's a Sunday evening, so I think we'll be ok. We'll see what time it is and likely choose one of your suggestions that fits in with the timing.
