reservations

what does subject to compulsary reservation mean? or reservation recommended mean? if the R Is not in a solid color circle than are reservations necessary.

compulsary means you MUST have reservation to ride train (often faster trains like TGV). Recommended means they think it's a good idea to have reservation ...especially if you have plans that would get screwed up if you missed that train. But I have also been told that if you are ON the train w/o a reservation, it really means you might have to stand up if there're no seats left.

Hi Barry,
... if we know the train we will be taking when we leave a city [where we have just arrived], while still at the train station [or bus station] we make our seat reservations then and there. That gets it done and then you can enjoy your visit. Seat reservations are not expensive ... so if you change your mind, it's not the end of the world, so to speak. It certainly beats standing up!
... bon voyage! P
