We are renting an apartment in Paris through VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner.) The owner sent us information about an insurance policy for the apartment that she says is required by French law. The insurance covers liability and cancellation. Has anyone been required to purchase apartment insurance for short-term rental (5 days) in France? If so, are there any options that we should consider?
I am renting an apartment in Paris for 10 days that I found on the VRBO site. The owner mentioned that she thought insurance was a good idea, but she didn't say it was mandatory.
Hi Sharon, we rented a house this past summer in south-west france for 2 weeks through Gites.com and did not need to pay any insurance. I don't recall reading about it on any of the sites we looked at.I would suggest you check out another site and see if anyone else mentions this "insurance". It could be a new thing, but I dont know.Good Luck, Sylvia
Based on your experiences with renting in France it sounds like this may be a "requirement" of this owner rather than something required by French law. I would have felt better about it if it had been included in the costs posted on the VBRO owner website or mentioned before we placed the deposit. It doesn't appear to be too expensive--22 Euro--but it does add to the cost.
Have rented in Paris this year and last through vactioninparis.com and iloveparisapartments.com and did not have to pay an extra fee for insurance.
Update: Thanks for your responses to our question about required rental insurance. With the information that you all provided we e-mailed the apartment owner and she responded immediately saying that we wouldn't have to purchase the insurance. We're excited about the location--Ile Saint Louis for the off season (January) price of 110 Euro per night. If you're thinking about an apartment in Paris you might want to check it out--VRBO #94988.
I also was questioning the rental insurance, when I stumbled upon this FAQ. Our rental company we booked with, via VRBO, said on the bottom of their contract that it's REQUIRED BY FRENCH LAW, which seems to be a farce, and then points us to a travel insurance company that charges 53 euros to insure for 1,000 euros. I smell a rat!! So, it's not the law in France?
I never got it, so I assume it was not mandatory. Maybe the landlord requires it, but that is different than it being a "law."
We rented an apt. for two weeks last summer and were required to purchase Insurance. It was about 16E for the two weeks. The landlord said it was mandatory to cover them and us if something happened to the apt. Accidental cooking fire, etc.
Did you pay it to the landlord or a bonded insurance company?
Edwin
I paid the Insurance Company.
Have rented in Paris twice so far and have not been required to purchase apt insurance. Am renting again this year and this has not been required.
