My family of 6 is traveling to Germany and Benelux in August. We have been to Germany and Austria a couple of times before and usually stay in guesthouses and inns which are recommended by the local tourist office when we arrive in a town. But we've never traveled during the busy month of August. Should we be making reservations ahead of time, or can we rely on the local tourist offices on the day we get there. I should add we like staying in smaller towns outside big cities, a little off the beaten track.

Especially during a busy travel period I like to reserve in advance just to make sure that I get the best budget option--I'm always concerned that I'll have to pay more than I'd like to if I don't book ahead. That's just me...
