Renting an apartment in Germany

I'm looking for tips in renting an apartment in Germany. I'm planning on renting apartment in Berlin and Munich for my family and I this May and early June. I've found some apartments in both locations, but I'm nervous about renting from a private party. Any tips to ensure I don't get taken advantage of would be appreciated!!!

My family and I have been going to Europe – mainly German speaking countries for many years. Up until 4 years ago it was hotels, guest houses, pensions, etc. – and we loved it. As the ability for longer trips came up, I started thinking about apartments.
Like you, I was very concerned about making a wrong decision. Unlike you, I wanted to stay in the country, not city. What I did was find internet sites which represented owners and provided pictures, information, etc. for properties. Then went to the town tourist site where the places were and compared information (and stars and prices.) I was lucky and struck gold the first time out and have been back three times with another visit in June.

I have been renting apartments in Western Europe (including Germany) for a number of years and have never had a bad experience. Sites like VRBO, HomeAway and the actual town/city sites in Germany are great resources. Trip Advisor has rental reviews and I especially love the Slow Travel website for reviews. I usually look for apartments that have a few reviews and then see how quickly and professionally emails are returned. Once you rent an apartment, you may never go back to hotels - I know I haven't....
