Renting a car in France and returning to Spain

Is it reasonable to rent a car in France (Nice) and return it in Spain (probably somewhere around San Sebastian)? As an alternative, we could return it in France (say, the airport at Biarritz) and then go by bus/train down to San Sebastian.

We usually rent with Hertz (in France, Spain, Ireland) but are open to other companies that might be better for a cross-border rental.

You will pay big bucks in drop off charges to rent in one country and return in another. It might be better to rent in France, return it there and rent again once you get to Spain if you need a car there.

Ouch! and Ouch!! Well, we didn't want a car in SS anyway. Clearly better to rent there, for the couple of days of touring.

And, wow, those rates look like they've climbed. In 2008 our rates from Hertz (week rental) were: Spain (243 euro), France (230 euro), Ireland (216 euro) -- and the Ireland rental was for an automatic. I'd better start hunting for the rental car deals!

You're looking in the wrong place.

I just checked kayak.com for a one-week, mid-summer rental, Nice pick-up, Biarritz drop-off: $303 total. Carrentals.com showed same thing at $306 total.

Screwed up and 'edit' is broken. $350 at kayak and $243 at carrentals. Both were Alamo at Nice Gare Sncf.
