Renting a car in Bayeux?

My parents and I decided to take the train from Paris to Bayeux and see the museum and tapestry and then renting a car and driving to the beaches and then driving back and spending the night. How soon should we book a rental car for late June? We will be then driving to Honfleur and Rouen and then taking a train back to Paris. Should we book our train tickets well in adavance or when we get there? Thanks!

Brendon, I'd probably book the rental car at least a few months in advance. Be sure to request an automatic, unless you're comfortable driving a manual trans. The last time I rented a car in Bayeux, it was somewhat of a "spur of the moment" thing, and the owner of the Hotel made all the arrangements (which was good as the rental staff didn't speak any English!). As I recall, it was a Hertz agency. I'd suggest packing along a good Map and a GPS if possible, as it's easy to get lost on the country roads. If you have time, you might consider stopping by the Gun Batteries at Longues sur Mer, as they're only about a 15-minute drive from Bayeux. They were used during the filming of The Longest Day. One point to mention - there's not really much to see at the Beaches. You might consider taking one of the excellent tours offered in that area, as it will make your visit much more interesting and rewarding. If you want website links for the tours, post another note. Happy travels!

We lived exploring the beaches on our own. So different strokes for different folks. My one recollection is the rental agency wasn't open Sunday. Smart move taking a train from Paris and then renting a car!

Car rental in Caen would be easier than in Bayeux because in Caen you can pick up your car right by the train station. If you book in advance (up to three months allowed) at www.tgv-europe.com, you can get a Prem's fare as low as €15.00 for Paris-Caen. The standard 2nd class fare is €32.90. If you do the same for Rouen-Paris, the best Prem's fare is €10.00. The standard 2nd class fare is €21.60.
